Record-setting growth and development—20,000 new apartments in the last ten years with 13,000 more on the way—calls for greater involvement by residents and neighborhoods in shaping Salt Lake’s future. How will the city’s proposed Affordable Housing Overlay factor into the city’s housing needs? We, the undersigned, favor affordable housing but are concerned about many provisions within the proposed 2022 Affordable Housing Overlay. Of greatest concern is this new Overlay will have little impact on helping low-income home buyers or renters. We are asking for greater transparency in the Overlay planning process, greater involvement from Salt Lake residents, and answers to a myriad of complex and important questions that relate to water, infrastructure, enforcement, upkeep, quality, environment and many other issues.
